What now?

“Nice.. eh di pagkagraduate mo nyan magiging reporter ka na?” this is the usual word that says by many when they hear that I’m a Journalism graduating student. I hope that it’s easier said than done.

The big question for a graduating student like us is “Where would I be working after 2 months?” First thought that comes into mind is Call centres. Now that there is a financial crisis, worldwide – it is not that easy to get into call centres.

Why call centres is first on the list of newly graduates? It is maybe because of practicality. In the world of Journalist, I admit that the salary of a writer (especially neophyte) is not enough to support our basic needs. This is the reason why Journalism graduates never (maybe some of them) chose to be a writer in a daily newspaper in the first place.

But before thinking about the salaries and the write ups… think first in applying for a job (a writer) in different publications, magazines or broadsheets. Publications choose their applicants based on what school they graduated and not on how well an applicant express his/her ideas in writing. It’s bias… unfair. We just want to try what it is like in the real world of writing/publishing.

Being discarded by this publication, newly graduate chooses the second best work for them. There are advertising agencies, the public relations agencies and also the corporate communication. Other jobs may not be related in being a Journalism graduate.

Some Journalism graduates didn’t even see themselves being a writer 3 or 5 years from now. I ask some of my classmates where would they be working after the journey of being a student… and most of them really answer “Call centres.” Experience and for practicality are their reasons.

Our world would change if we start earning money for ourselves. There would be less socialization (unlike when we’re students). Task should be done seriously because it is for the things we need in our lives.

woody1 For now.. I’m still thinking of where I would be after my journey here in the university. I want to enter the world of photography and learn more about it. I’ll also want to be a freelancer, or a story writer in a comic book, (I’m not that good in writing novels, short stories will do) this time I have the chance of making my dream come true. There’s too much to think of what kind of job I want but I’m not 100% sure if I am able to make this one into reality.

Short but sweet would be the best description for this article as you were able to relay your thoughts on what are the possibilities after graduating. it seems like call centers are the last resort for anyone since the pay is sometimes quite good. i saw some errors around but still a little polishing can make it clearer.

I agree with you. If someone is looking for a work that provides instant income, then being an agent is the right job for him. I just think that call center is a good place to discover what you really want in life. In addition, there’s usually no need to think about work after your shift for it’s not that stressful. I just think that, a person will enjoy his job and salary for the first two years, after that he will feel like his job seems repetitive. The tendency is that he will shift from one company to another in order to find his luck. 91

I hope you will pursue a career in photography. It may be a rocky road but you’ll get there because the talent is very natural to you. Some people tried very hard to acquire such skills but you got it effortlessly… I know you’ll get there… 89%

Exactly! this article tells the truth really. There is no other job who pays high salary for a newly graduate students, it’s only the CALL CENTER’S. I doubt if there is a company who can beat the Call centers salary payment when it comes to a newly graduate students who applied on them..

I have lots of friends working in different Call Center company. Call Center is not that bad as for other people’s point of view. It will also help you to improve your english vocabulary, your diction, tone. It will also help you on how to deal with other people from other country properly. The work itself has a lot to offer, for those who didn’t know yet. As our country’s situation right now we should be practical and don’t be choosy. Let the call center serve as our guide for the next job that we want (if being an agent didn’t meet our expectations).

It is better to be employed in a Call Center job than to have “no job” at all.. hehe.. =D Tsk.. tsk.. it’s really difficult imagining this thing. just check some errors. 87 %

You can do it, Fitz! I’ll be very happy if you become a cartoonist and at the same time a writer in a comic book. You’re a good artist, for that reason I have faith in you (nananalig ako sa’yo). Nothing is impossible when you believe (grin).

By the way, about some publications which base their applicants’ qualifications on the schools or universities they come from, I can relate to that. Do you think my editor in sports during our OJT would allow some a**hole to edit my work if I were from ATENEO or LA SALLE? Would he let my article be published without checking first even if he was BUSY? (Sorry, got carried away.) Grrrr! If only I were a boy! I would give the both my former editor and the one who edited my article some punching and kicking. You know what? I haven’t got even! Ha-ha. (89)

Fitz, after five years, I picture you as a creative director of a well-known publication, not just comic book. With your talent, no doubt you’ll be rich. Regarding people who judge applicants by the universities they come from, **** them! All we have to do is to prove them they are WRONG!

A little proofreading will do good on your article.

I tend to get the message but the medium seems to be lost in the grammar and sentence structure. Yes I understand the discrimination. It’s a disease prevalent in the Philippines. Remember, people in Manila get their maids from the Visayas and Mindanao because they are “unter mensch” or sub humans! So, the same hierarchy is applied in every facet of society – education, the community where one lives, the properties that one possesses, etc. It is a behavioural quirk that may take centuries to unravel. Please go back and check your article before posting.[90]

The author needs to revisit the article to find her errors in grammar. If I were an editor and the author would apply to me with this kind of article (I don’t question the content it’s just the grammar), then I need more time to think whether I would take her as my writer or send her back to school to study again sentence construction and subject and verb agreement…I said it not to hurt you but to tell you that you’re a promising writer more so if you would be more particular with correct grammar. 86 goes to you.

You know, call center is a BIG help for us.c: Though working in a call center can be cause you too much stress, it’s all worth it because it pays off what you’ve done. (good salary…c:)

I used to remember one of our professors saying, “Keep it simple and short”(KISS). This one is a nice article. You’ve been able to convey your message to your readers.

Polish some parts of your article and improve it.c: I give you a 90%.c:

There seems to be something troubling the writer about a certain thing called a CAREER.

hehehe! I think we all have that problem Fitz, it seems that as of now, a Call Center job is the most common solution that can provide us with a stabilized future. Don’t worry though, your skills as a photojournalist are not going anywhere. As long as you have it in you, it can and it will be used when the time comes.

Grammar is still up for a little tweaking but still. . .you deserve. .

Minus all the grammar and sentence glitches this would make a very good article for me.

The ideas presented by the writer dwells on the realm of reality and were easily recognizable in today’s field of mass communication.

Yes there is difficulty in landing good jobs in the field of mass media, due mostly to lack of openings, and yes, there is discrimination. So the real question for a journ graduate is what are you willing to do to land the job you desire? Granting, of course, you know what you want.

    I’ll give this a (92).

Fitz, you’re right in your assessment. I experienced to be rejected once in APAC Call Center. Out of 50 applicants, 8 of us were just chosen to undergo to 2 tests and final interview. out of 8, only 1 person was hired.

Anyway, call center is realy promissing.. but i hope you find the carreer that will satisfy your longing.
